Silk Road, UNWTO

UNWTO has developed a Silk Road Programme which is promoting the sustainable tourism development alongside the historic Silk course. This program will enable the equal benefit for the local communities involved, while involving investors and supporting conservation of the cultural and natural heritage(UNWTO, 2013a).
The member states are : “Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, DPR Korea, Rep. Korea, Egypt, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan (as of November 2012).” (UNWTO, 2013b)

The areas that they are focusing on are divided into 3 categories:
      1.     Promotion and Marketing
2.     Capacity building and destination management
3.     Easiness in travel (UNWTO, 2013c)

Further information is available on the UNWTO website under Silk Road Programme.
This program will enable different cities to benefit from tourism. Looking forward into opening new destinations to the tourism market.
